Florida Raises Gun-Buying Age to 21 After Parkland Shooting

In a significant move following the tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the state has passed a new law raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21. This legislative action, known as the Public Safety Act, was signed into law by Governor Rick Scott in March 2018, marking a pivotal change in the state's approach to gun control.

The Parkland shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 17 students and staff members, sparked widespread outrage and calls for stricter gun laws. The new age restriction is seen as a direct response to the demands of activists, survivors, and families affected by the shooting. Under the new law, individuals under the age of 21 are now prohibited from purchasing rifles or long guns, a move that has been met with both support and criticism.

Supporters of the bill argue that raising the age limit will help prevent similar tragedies by keeping firearms out of the hands of young adults, who they believe are more prone to impulsive behavior. Critics, however, contend that the law infringes on Second Amendment rights and may not effectively address the root causes of gun violence.

The Public Safety Act also includes other measures, such as the implementation of a 'red flag' law, which allows law enforcement to temporarily confiscate weapons from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. Additionally, the law allocates funds for school safety enhancements and mental health programs, aiming to create a more comprehensive approach to public safety.

This legislative change has sparked a broader conversation about gun control across the United States, with other states considering similar measures. As Florida continues to navigate the aftermath of the Parkland tragedy, the effectiveness of these new laws will be closely monitored.
