Florida Highway Speeds Set to Rise to 75 mph Under New Senate Bill

A new bill moving through the Florida State Senate could soon see the maximum speed limit on highways increased to 75 mph. Currently, the speed limit on Florida's highways is set at 70 mph, but Senate Bill 886, if passed, would allow the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to raise the limit on specific stretches of highway.

The proposed change is aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion on some of Florida's busiest roads. Proponents of the bill argue that increasing the speed limit could help to alleviate traffic jams, particularly during peak travel times. However, the move has sparked a debate among safety advocates and some members of the public who are concerned about the potential for increased accidents and fatalities on the roads.

Under the terms of the bill, FDOT would have the authority to designate which highways could see the increased speed limit. The decision would be based on factors such as road design, traffic volume, and safety records. This selective approach is intended to ensure that only roads capable of safely accommodating higher speeds are affected by the change.

The bill has already passed through several committees and is now awaiting further discussion and a vote in the full Senate. If approved, it would then move to the Florida House of Representatives for consideration. Should it pass both chambers, the bill would then go to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature, which would make the change official.

As Florida continues to grow and its roadways become increasingly congested, the debate over the appropriate speed limits will likely continue. For now, all eyes are on the State Senate as they consider this significant change to Florida's traffic laws.
