California’s Top Privacy Cop Issues Advisory on Data Broker Registration
California's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, has recently issued an advisory notice to data brokers operating within the state, emphasizing the need for compliance with the Delete Act. The advisory, released on March 15, 2024, serves as a reminder for data brokers to register with the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) by January 31, 2024, or face potential legal consequences.
The Delete Act, a significant piece of legislation, aims to give Californians more control over their personal information by allowing them to request the deletion of their data from data brokers' records. The advisory underscores the importance of the January 31 deadline, as it marks the first year that data brokers are required to register under the new law. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $200 per day for each day of non-compliance, highlighting the state's commitment to protecting consumer privacy.
Attorney General Bonta's advisory also outlines the steps data brokers must take to register, including providing detailed information about their operations and the types of personal information they collect and sell. The CPPA will maintain a public registry of all registered data brokers, increasing transparency and accountability within the industry.
This move by California's top privacy official is part of a broader effort to safeguard personal data and enhance consumer privacy rights. As data breaches and privacy concerns continue to make headlines, the state's proactive approach to regulating data brokers is seen as a critical step towards ensuring that individuals have greater control over their personal information.
