Donald Trump, now officially the oldest president ever sworn in for a first term, is undergoing his annual physical this Friday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center—a long-awaited examination that may finally shed light on the health of a man who has kept medical details tightly under wraps for years. The event has reignited debate, speculation, and even late-night jabs over the physical and cognitive fitness of the nation’s leaders, making Trump’s checkup a headline event well beyond presidential protocol.
Trump, 78, announced on his social media platform, “I have never felt better, but nevertheless, these things must be done!” His upbeat tone did little to quell public curiosity, as many recall his history of withholding specifics: basic facts about his health have regularly been glossed over since his time in office, setting a marked contrast to his persistent scrutiny of his predecessor Joe Biden’s age and capacity.
This examination is especially significant given a near-fatal assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania last July—since then, there has been virtually no new public information about Trump’s health. Instead of a full disclosure at the time, Rep. Ronny Jackson, Trump’s former White House physician, released a brief memo describing a gunshot wound to Trump’s right ear but sidestepped wider health details. The same pattern of minimal transparency was evident last November, when Dr. Bruce A. Aronwald issued a letter declaring Trump to be in “excellent” health, without providing test results, measurements, or any substantive medical data—though he did note a reduction in Trump’s weight and described his physical and cognitive exams as “exceptional.”
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel did not hold back on Tuesday, skewering Trump’s upcoming checkup with characteristic humor. “After all he’s put us through, it will be nice to know that on Friday somebody will be squeezing his balls for a change,” Kimmel quipped, later predicting Trump would get an “excellent report” and lampooning the history of glowing, sometimes suspiciously curated, medical statements from the Trump camp. Indeed, during his presidency, there were instances when Trump’s health letters were reportedly dictated by him and released by doctors labeled as overly loyal or uncritical.
This culture of secrecy and spectacle around presidential health is not new for Trump. In late 2019, he made an unannounced trip to Walter Reed, breaking with the routine practice of publicizing such visits in advance. Then, during his 2020 battle with COVID-19, the White House issued optimistic health briefings, while later reports—like Mark Meadows’ admission that some vital signs were “very concerning”—suggested the true picture may have been less rosy. In a memorable 2020 interview, Trump sought to demonstrate his own cognitive fitness by reciting, “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.”
At a time when age and fitness are major themes in national politics, the outcome and transparency (or lack thereof) of Trump’s physical is more than a personal matter—it’s a symbol of broader issues with openness, accountability, and the spectacle of presidential health in the public eye.
