Florida Lawmakers Move to Increase Highway Speed Limits to 75 mph
Florida lawmakers have advanced a bill that could soon see the state's highway speed limits increase from 70 mph to 75 mph. The proposed legislation, which has garnered approval from both the House and Senate, aims to adjust speed limits on specific stretches of Florida's highways to better align with traffic flow and potentially enhance road safety.
Supporters of the bill argue that raising the speed limit will not only reflect the actual speeds at which many drivers are traveling but could also lead to fewer speed-related accidents by reducing the disparity between the limit and the flow of traffic. Critics, however, express concerns over potential increases in accidents and fatalities due to higher speeds.
If signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, the change would affect rural interstates and other limited-access highways across the state. The Florida Department of Transportation would be responsible for determining which sections of the highway network would see the increased speed limits.
