Kaleena Smith Honored as Gatorade’s California Girls Basketball Player of the Year
Kaleena Smith, a standout junior from Ontario Christian High School, has been named the 2025 Gatorade California Girls Basketball Player of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes her exceptional performance both on and off the court, highlighting her as one of the state's top high school athletes.
Throughout the season, Smith demonstrated remarkable skills and leadership, averaging 24.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 3.2 steals per game. Her contributions were instrumental in leading her team to a 28-3 record and a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 4A championship game. Beyond her athletic achievements, Smith maintains a 4.0 GPA and is actively involved in community service, notably volunteering at local food banks and youth basketball clinics.
The Gatorade award not only celebrates athletic excellence but also emphasizes the importance of character and academic achievement. Smith's recognition places her in the company of other notable athletes who have gone on to achieve success at the collegiate and professional levels. She is now eligible to compete for the national Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this spring.
Smith expressed her gratitude for the honor, stating, "It's a huge honor to be recognized, but I couldn't have done it without my teammates and coaches. This award is a testament to our hard work and dedication as a team." Her coach, Sarah Johnson, praised Smith's dedication and leadership, noting, "Kaleena is not only an incredible athlete but also a role model for her peers. Her work ethic and positive attitude are truly inspiring."
