Massive Strike Halts Operations at 13 German Airports

On March 10, 2025, a significant strike by airport security and ground staff led to the cancellation of all passenger flights at 13 German airports, including major hubs like Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. The industrial action, orchestrated by the Verdi union, aimed to push for better working conditions and higher wages for airport workers.

The strike commenced at 2 a.m. and was set to last until midnight, resulting in over 2,300 flight cancellations. Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's busiest, saw all its passenger flights grounded, with only cargo and emergency flights permitted to operate. The disruption affected hundreds of thousands of passengers, many of whom were advised to postpone their travel plans.

The Verdi union, representing around 25,000 airport workers, has been in negotiations with employers for months but has yet to reach an agreement. The union demands include a 10.5% wage increase or at least an additional 500 euros per month, highlighting the financial strain faced by workers amid rising living costs.
