PG&E Plans Nine New Community Microgrids in Northern California
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is set to invest $43 million in the development of nine new community microgrids across Northern California. These microgrids, which will combine solar power and battery storage, aim to enhance energy resilience in communities prone to outages.
The initiative targets areas that have been significantly impacted by power disruptions, especially during natural disasters such as wildfires. By integrating solar-plus-storage systems, these microgrids will provide a sustainable and reliable energy source, reducing dependency on the main grid and improving local power security.
Each microgrid is designed to operate independently during grid outages, ensuring critical facilities like hospitals, schools, and emergency services remain operational. This project not only supports California's environmental goals but also directly addresses the immediate needs of vulnerable communities.
The funding for these microgrids comes from PG&E's $275 million microgrid incentive program, which aims to bolster the state's infrastructure against future energy challenges.
