U.S. Opens Probe Into Nearly 1.3 Million Ford F-150 Trucks Over Unexpected Gear Downshifts

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks due to reports of unexpected gear downshifts. This action comes after numerous complaints from drivers about their vehicles unexpectedly shifting to a lower gear, which could lead to a sudden loss of control and potential accidents.

The investigation focuses on F-150 trucks from the model years 2014 to 2017, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. According to the NHTSA, these unexpected downshifts can occur at any speed, posing a significant safety risk. The issue is believed to stem from a potential failure in the transmission's software or hardware, which Ford is currently working to diagnose and resolve.

Ford has not yet issued a recall for the affected vehicles, but the company is cooperating fully with the NHTSA's investigation. The outcome of this probe could lead to a recall or a software update to fix the issue. Ford F-150 owners are advised to stay informed about the investigation's progress and any forthcoming actions from Ford.
